Bridging Legal Theory and Practice: Reflections on My PLT Placement at W & G Lawyers

By Bosheng (Greg) Shi,Bond University Bachelor of Laws Graduate and Practical Legal Training Student at the College of Law

During my Practical Legal Training placement at W & G Lawyers, I had the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience across family law, civil litigation and tribunal matters. The placement allowed me to apply the legal knowledge developed during my studies at Bond University to real client matters and court processes. It significantly strengthened my practical skills and provided me with a deeper understanding of the responsibilities and professional standards expected of a solicitor.

Client Communication and Legal Documentation

Throughout my placement, I assisted in drafting professional correspondence, preparing letters and emails, and completing costs notices for filing in family law proceedings. These tasks helped me understand the importance of clear, accurate and client-focused communication.

I also learned that effective legal drafting requires more than applying legal principles. Each document must reflect the client’s instructions, address the relevant procedural requirements and communicate complex information in a practical and understandable manner. This experience improved my attention to detail and demonstrated how the quality and timeliness of communication can directly affect client confidence and the efficient management of a matter.

In-Person Court Observation and Litigation Insight

One of the most valuable aspects of my placement was attending an in-person family law judgment delivery. Observing the Court firsthand gave me a greater appreciation of how legal principles, evidence and procedural requirements operate in practice.

The experience highlighted the differences between studying court procedures in a textbook and observing their application in a real courtroom. It reinforced the importance of thorough preparation, professional conduct, courtroom etiquette and careful attention to judicial directions. It also allowed me to better understand the roles of solicitors, counsel, judicial officers and the parties throughout the litigation process.

Legal Research and Matter Management

I conducted research into legislation, case law and procedural requirements to assist the solicitors with client advice and the preparation of matters. I also reviewed supporting documents, prepared chronologies and assisted in organising evidence and court materials.

These tasks strengthened my ability to identify relevant legal and factual issues, distinguish important information from less relevant material and present findings in a logical and practical format. I gained a greater understanding of how effective file management, accurate record-keeping and compliance with deadlines are essential to the proper conduct of legal matters.

Exposure to QCAT and QBCC Matters

My placement also provided me with insight into matters involving the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the Queensland Building and Construction Commission. With Nancy’s guidance, I developed a clearer understanding of the procedural requirements applying to building disputes and the relationship between regulatory processes and tribunal proceedings.

This work was particularly interesting because it demonstrated how matters progress in practice, including the importance of satisfying jurisdictional and procedural prerequisites before commencing or continuing a claim. It allowed me to see how lawyers must consider not only the substantive merits of a client’s position, but also whether the correct procedural steps have been followed.

Mentorship and Professional Development

The support and guidance provided by the team at W & G Lawyers were instrumental in my professional development. Melinda’s guidance helped me better understand the importance of professional responsibility, practical judgment and maintaining a high standard of work when dealing with client matters.

The solicitors and staff took the time to explain legal procedures, provide constructive feedback and involve me in meaningful tasks. Their patience and willingness to share their experience created a supportive learning environment and encouraged me to develop greater confidence in my legal abilities.

Reflection and Future Development

My placement at W & G Lawyers was an important step in bridging the gap between academic study and professional legal practice. It strengthened my skills in legal research, drafting, client communication, court preparation and matter management. More importantly, it helped me appreciate the level of care, responsibility and professionalism required when assisting clients with matters that may significantly affect their lives.

I am grateful to the entire team at W & G Lawyers for their patience, guidance and support throughout my placement. The experience has reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career in legal practice and has provided me with a strong foundation for my continued professional development.
