Work Placement Student Reflection for W & G Lawyers

Work Placement Student Reflection for W & G Lawyers

A Warm Welcome into the Legal Profession

I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to intern at W & G Lawyers over the past 6 weeks. As this was my first experience working in a law firm, I was definitely a bit nervous walking in on my first day. However, those nerves quickly faded as I was welcomed into such a supportive and encouraging environment.

Learning from Inspiring Mentors

One of the most valuable aspects of this internship was the opportunity to learn directly from Melinda and Nancy. Their depth of knowledge, professionalism, and willingness to guide me made a significant impact on my experience. They were always so generous with their time and advice, and observing the way they approach both their work and their clients taught me lessons that extend beyond legal knowledge. The entire team was approachable and kind, which made it easy to ask questions and feel comfortable stepping outside my comfort zone.

Gaining Practical Experience and Professional Growth

Throughout my internship, I’ve had the opportunity to research and write articles, assist in preparing legal documents, attend client meetings. It was incredibly insightful to understand what legal practice truly involves, as well as what it means to work in a small firm, from both a legal and a business perspective. I also had the chance to assist with administrative and marketing tasks, which helped me develop new soft skills, particularly in communication, organisation, and adaptability, which I think pushed me to grow in confidence and initiative.

Advice for Future Interns

If I were to offer advice to someone in the same position as me, it would be to stay curious and be open to every opportunity. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, take risks and make mistakes, everyone at the firm understands what it feels like to be new, and the more engaged and proactive you are, the more rewarding this experience will be.
