Completing my practical legal training placement at W & G Lawyers has been a defining chapter in both my academic and early professional life. Over the course of my placement, I have had the opportunity to observe experienced practitioners in action and gain insight into the daily realities of legal work in a dynamic firm. What stands out most is how the placement has shaped not only my legal skills but also my professional mindset.
Exposure to Real Legal Work
From the moment I joined W & G Lawyers, I was welcomed into the team and entrusted with meaningful tasks. These experiences highlighted the difference between law on the page and law in practice; how legal principles translate into client-centred action, how timelines and priorities shift, and how each matter can present unique challenges.
Observing how the W & G team navigate the complexities of legal practice helped me appreciate the importance of empathy, clarity of communication and meticulous preparation. It becomes clear that law isn’t just about knowing the rules, it’s about applying them with purpose and integrity.
Developing Legal Skills
Throughout my placement I sharpened a number of key skills: legal research, drafting, file management, client communication and time-management. The firm’s supportive environment made a huge difference. My supervising solicitor took the time to review my work and always encouraged questions. This kind of mentorship transformed what could have been a stressful experience into a highly productive learning opportunity.
Understanding Firm Culture & Professionalism
One of the less tangible, but perhaps most important, lessons I took away was about culture and professionalism. At W & G Lawyers, I observed how the team combines technical legal expertise with genuine care for clients. Whether answering phone calls, managing sensitive client information or collaborating with colleagues, I realised that the way we conduct ourselves matters just as much as the work itself.
Reflecting on the Personal Growth
Looking back on my placement, I can see how I’ve grown, not only as someone studying to become a solicitor, but as a professional shaping my work-ethic, attitude and resilience. I’m more comfortable engaging directly in legal processes. I have a better grasp of how legal practice is organised and how priorities are managed, and I’ve developed a stronger sense of what I want my career to look like.
There were moments of challenge, but each of those pushed me outside my comfort zone and it’s in those moments that learning happens. I learned how to stay focused when things are busy, how to ask for help appropriately, and how to reflect on what works (and what doesn’t) in my approach.
Looking Ahead
Having completed my placement at W & G Lawyers, I feel better prepared for the next phase of my legal journey. I understand that the path ahead will continue to involve learning and adaptation, but I also feel confident that the firm has given me a strong foundation.
To anyone about to undertake a legal placement: it can be overwhelming at the start but embrace the opportunity. Engage fully, ask questions, volunteer for meaningful work, reflect on feedback and observe not just what is done, but how and why.
Thank you to the team at W & G Lawyers for their guidance and trust. I’m excited about what comes next and I’ll carry the lessons I’ve learned here with me.
