PLT Student Reflection: Lessons from My Time at W&G Lawyers

As part of our continued commitment to fostering future legal talent, W & G Lawyers was pleased to host Thomas Nguyen, a PLT student from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), for a six-week placement from August to September 2025. His time with us reflected our firm’s dedication to providing aspiring practitioners with meaningful, practice-based learning opportunities that bridge academic study and professional practice.

Stepping Into the Legal Profession

Before starting at W&G Lawyers, I had many doubts. I had never worked in an office environment before, and I wasn’t sure if I would be able to adapt to the professional expectations of a law firm. However, as the weeks progressed, I began to understand the systems, the workflow, and the importance of each role in a legal team. With that understanding came confidence.

My responsibilities ranged from legal research and reviewing court documents to scheduling meetings, greeting clients, and handling phone inquiries. These tasks, while varied, shared a common goal: supporting the firm’s clients with professionalism and care. Each assignment gave me the chance to apply the legal knowledge I had gained during my studies in a real-world setting.

The Most Valuable Lesson I Learned

The most important takeaway from my time at W&G Lawyers is that I am capable of working in a law firm. In the beginning, I questioned whether I belonged in such an environment—but I came to realise that confidence grows with experience. Once I understood how things were done, I became more capable, more efficient, and more engaged.

This is a lesson I believe all PLT students should keep in mind. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed at the start, especially if you’re new to office life. But the truth is, much of the anxiety comes from unfamiliarity, not from lack of ability.

Advice for Future PLT Students

If you’re about to begin your PLT placement and you’re feeling uncertain—you’re not alone. Many of us enter this stage with doubts. But you don’t need to know everything on day one. What matters is your willingness to learn, ask questions, and remain open to feedback. Growth comes quickly when you step outside your comfort zone.

Working at W&G Lawyers helped me see that real legal experience is not about being perfect—it’s about being present, curious, and committed to the process.

Looking Ahead

I’m incredibly grateful to the team at W&G Lawyers for giving me the opportunity to learn, contribute, and grow during my placement. This internship has not only reinforced my passion for the legal profession but also prepared me for the next chapter in my legal career.
